Survey Finds Cannabis Beneficial For Many Parkinson’s Patients

A survey in Germany has found more than half of patients with Parkinson’s disease who use medical cannabis have self-reported beneficial clinical effects.

Analysis of more than 1,300 patient questionnaires revealed over 8% of patients with PD reported using cannabis products and 54% of those reported a beneficial clinical effect.

More than 40% of users reported it helped manage pain and muscle cramps, and more than 20% a reduction in stiffness, freezing, tremor, depression, anxiety and restless legs. According to the American Parkinson Disease Association, “freezing” involves sudden, short, transient episodes preventing initiating movement such as walking.

The clinical trial at CHUM involved 78 participants who had cocaine use disorder, which was severe for the majority of the participants. Randomly split into two groups, one group received 800 mg of CBD daily and the other got a placebo.

Cannabidiol’s Bacteria Killing Credentials Again Confirmed

University of Queensland researchers have revealed cannabidiol can kill a wide range of harmful bacteria – including those responsible for gonorrhoea, meningitis and legionnaires disease.

A collaborative research project between UQ and Botanix Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX:BOT) could result in the development of antibiotics for tackling bacteria resistant to conventional medicines – an increasingly pressing issue. In the case of gram-negative infections, there have essentially been no novel molecular classes discovered and approved for clinical use for more than 50 years.

CBD could be the bacterial-killing answer to gonorrhoea

Australian researchers report they have shown synthetic CBD can kill a range of bacteria responsible for conditions like gonorrhoea, meningitis and legionnaires disease, a find they suggest could lead to the first new class of antibiotics for resistant bacteria in six decades.

To test the antimicrobial activity of cannabidiol (CBD), the research team from the University of Queensland used lab models to mimic a two-week patient treatment and see how quickly “the bacteria mutated to try to outwit CBD’s killing power,” notes a university release.
