Japan More and more voices are being raised in Japan, calling for an end to the zero-tolerance policy on cannabis. One political party wants to see the ban on research on the cannabis plant lifted, thereby legalising medicinal cannabis. Interest in industrial hemp applications has also been growing. Might we tentatively be able to speak of a cannabis comeback?

Over the past year we have heard stories of Big Pharma being out to get the growing medical cannabis industry. We wanted to know if there was any truth behind these fears, oft dismissed as conspiracy theories.

We spoke to a pharmaceutical market analyst* to see if the cannabis industry should fear Big Pharma. Here’s what they told us.

A body of research suggests yes, but scientists are having to fight red tape to study whether medical marijuana could substitute for opioid drugs.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s decision last week to list cannabis alongside the world’s deadliest drugs, like heroin, means that states will continue to decide on their own whether pot possession should be harshly punished and what, if any, patients are allowed access to a plant with many known medical uses.

Premier Alden McLaughlin (who is an attorney) outlined the case against moving forward with the legalization of medical marijuana in the Cayman Islands. He then endorsed moving forward with the legalization of medical marijuana in the Cayman Islands.

A statement released by the Office of the Premier noted the following:

New poll finds two-thirds of Los Angeles Residents believe Prop D has not been effective.

A new poll released today finds that residents of Los Angeles overwhelmingly believe patients should have access to medical marijuana through delivery services. Results show that a whopping 75% of residents are in favor of reforming Proposition D to allow for medical marijuana delivery.

A new non-profit medical marijuana dispensary has opened in Regina and owner Kelly Csada says she plans to donate a chunk of her profits to charity.

“There’s a lot of mental health and different things that I want to give back to so that’s why I decided to go the non-profit way.”

The business venture was a natural choice for Csada.

“I have Crohn’s disease and that’s what brought me here in the first place,” she said.

A bill currently on the desk of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's would add PTSD to the state’s list of qualifying conditions for medical marijuana. The measure passed both chambers of the state Legislature with broad bipartisan support, but Christie's record on cannabis is so abysmal that the bill's prospects are still up in the air. 

A quick breakdown of the vote in the Legislature revealed:

Analysis - 72 percent support in February. 79 percent by August.

They're the poll results politicians dream of - but it's support for medical marijuana that's hauling in the big numbers.

Until this year, the last time New Zealanders were asked for their views on legalising cannabis for medical use was in 2006, when a TV3/TNS poll reported 63 percent support.

And though it still lags behind, personal possession for any kind of use was at 64 percent support in the New Zealand Drug Foundation-commissioned poll released yesterday- up from a 50-50 split in February, and a huge rise from the mid-30 percent range it has languished in since the 1990s.
