New Arizona medical marijuana proposal emerging for 2018

Less than a month after voters rejected allowing the recreational use of marijuana, there’s a new — and scaled-back — proposal emerging for the 2018 ballot.

The initiative crafted by operators of a medical marijuana dispensary would expand the list of conditions for which a doctor could recommend a patient be allowed to use the otherwise-illegal drug. And it also would make it easier and cheaper for patients to get their marijuana, including allowing a large percentage of them to grow their own plants.

Proponents, the operators of the Independent Wellness Center, a medical marijuana dispensary in Apache Junction, need 150,642 valid signatures on petitions by July 5, 2018, to put the measure to voters that year.

Does Cannabis Cure Cancer?

One of the old, old arguments we’ve often had in the cannabis law reform movement is the question of whether cannabis is a “drug” or not. For a long time I was strongly of the opinion that it was, but over time I came to change my mind.

The term “a drug” is correctly applied to substances like THC, an active chemical which does interesting things in the brain and elsewhere. Cannabis of course contains THC, but cannabis isn’t just THC.

Canada: Health officials dispute Pemier's claim fentanyl appearing in marijuana

Is it true… Could pot now be laced with fentanyl?

That’s the claim Premier Christy Clark is making, as she takes her pitch for more help in the opioid crisis to Ottawa.

Speaking to reporters today, Clark said the toxic narcotic had turned up in pot seized by Vancouver cops.

“Vancouver police did a major seizure, they found cocaine with fentanyl, heroin with fentanyl, methamphetamine with fentanyl and marijuana with fentanyl,” she said.

It’s a worrying claim. And one that’s news to Vancouver Coastal Health’s Chief Medical Health Officer Patricia Daly.

“I can only speak for what we know in the Vancouver Coastal Region and we haven’t had any reports of fentanyl contamination of marijuana here at this point,” she said.

'Someday' could be closer if NFL wants to move ball on marijuana issue

USA TODAY Sports' Lorenzo Reyes looks at the three biggest story lines heading into week 11 of the NFL season.

Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

That’s the yin and yang of the marijuana issue as it pertains to the NFL drug policy.

Voters in seven states last week approved cannabis — either for recreational or medicinal use — and, by extension, advanced the argument that league's ban on it (officially) is like something out of the Stone Age.

If you’re keeping score, that’s 28 states plus the District of Columbia that legally allow weed in one form or another.

Many States Have Legalized Medical Marijuana, So Why Does DEA Still Say It Has No Therapeutic Use?

More than half the states–28, to be exact–including Arkansas, Florida and North Dakota as of the Nov. 8 election, and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for certain medical conditions.

And yet, the Drug Enforcement Administration still classifies marijuana as a Schedule I drug, defined by the 1970 Controlled Substances Act as a drug that has a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use (emphasis is mine) in the United States. Other Schedule I drugs include heroin, LSD and ecstasy.

At 5 years old, young Charlotte Figi had been suffering roughly 300 grand mal seizures weekly for years when her father, Matt, looking for alternatives to her mostly unsuccessful traditional allopathic treatments, found a video online extolling the benefits of CBD oil in the treatment of Dravet Syndrome. Under Colorado’s fledgling medical marijuana program, Charlotte’s parents found a strain of high cannabidiol (CBD), low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabis flower named R4 being sold at a Colorado dispensary.
