Australia: The Poster Children For Medical Cannabis Can’t Access Medical Cannabis

In October 2015 the then premier of NSW Mike Baird published a lengthy note on his Facebook page about an encounter he’d had with a young boy named Tyler Oldenburg.

Tyler has up to 40 seizures a day and his mother, Nicole, thinks medicinal cannabis will help. Baird said he was proud that NSW was “leading the nation” in researching the controversial drug.

“It’s my deepest hope that, as a result of these trials, Tyler and his family will soon be able to face a much brighter future,” he wrote.

Massachusetts: Leominster City Council OKs special permit for medical marijuana dispensary

After a heated discussion, the City Council voted 6-1 Monday night to grant the special permit needed by Prime Wellness Centers to open the city's first medical marijuana dispensary.

A vote on granting the special permit had to be held twice, after the initial 5-2 vote was deemed invalid due to the council needing a two-thirds majority to approve the permit request.

Ward 1 Councilor Gail Feckley, who had initially voted against the special permit, changed her mind during the second vote while at-large Councilor Claire Freda maintained her opposition to the permit request.

Alabama's slow embrace of medical marijuana

Unlike most states, Alabama does not allow the medical use of marijuana. But the state has recently passed laws allowing the use of some marijuana-derived extracts that can't get you high.

And Mark Coleman's testimony on his daughter's use of cannabidiol oil makes a compelling case for the drug's benefits.

Coleman's 15-year-old daughter, Mary Ann, has a severe case of autism. She doesn't speak and frequently tries to hurt herself - pinching her arms, slamming her head, biting whatever she can get into her mouth.

Then the Alabama legislature passed Leni's Law, which went into effect June 1, 2016, and Mary Ann's life improved "tenfold" since she began taking the CBD oil, her father said.

Marijuana industry representatives want stores to be able to stay open later in Denver, but elected officials weren’t ready Monday to change the city’s 7 p.m. closing time.

Mayor Michael Hancock and City Council would have to give the final OK on the proposal before recreational and medical marijuana stores can start serving evening customers.

Canadian Researchers to Study Cannabis Oil to Treat Kids' Epilepsy

One of the researchers launching a study into the potential benefits of cannabis oil on childhood epilepsy says he is interested to learn how the drug affects the children’s quality of life.

Dr. Richard Huntsman, a pediatric neurologist and a professor at the University of Saskatchewan, is leading the cannabis oil study along with Dr. Richard Tang-Wai, a pediatric epileptologist at the University of Alberta.

The main goal of their study is to learn if concentrated cannabis oil can be used safely in children with epilepsy. But they also want to look at whether it helps control seizures and whether it helps children’s lives improve, he told CTV News Channel Saturday.

Florida: An inside look at changing state's medical marijuana laws

More people will soon have access to Medical Marijuana, but first Florida lawmakers have to set the new rules.

There's a lot of confusion since the passing of Amendment 2 last year, which expands the 2014 law -- the one everyone is operating under right now -- to give more patients with more ailments access to the controversial weed.

To clear up some of the confusion, News4Jax was the only local TV station taken inside a secure Florida facility, west of Tallahassee, to reveal just how medical marijuana is being grown and sold, how it's getting ready to serve even more patients and when new rules allowing more people to legally use it will likely be in place.
