David Brown talks with Marc Wayne about his company's plans for the future, and how the medical market will play out in the face of a recreational market.

Marc Wayne, President of Canopy Health Innovations, says Canada is entering a golden age in cannabis research, as access to supply and interest from the public and private sector increases. While much of the attention is currently on the future economic potential of a recreational cannabis market, Wayne says he sees an enormous amount of potential in the medical sector as well. Access to a well-regulated supply of consistent product allowing for more clinical research and more confidence in the medical sector will mean significant advances in cannabis science, with Canada at the forefront.

The County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously today to ban all commercial cannabis activities -- medical and non-medical -- in unincorporated areas and took a first pass at regulating personal cultivation.

The move extends a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries in unincorporated areas that has been in place since 2010 and broadens the prohibition to include the cultivation, manufacture, testing and distribution of the drug for other than personal use.

CURE Pharmaceutical, a technologically-based drug delivery platform and its partner, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology will be conducting a clinical study to test whether cannabinoid compounds will reduce or eliminate cancerous cells.

Can cannabis really make cancer disappear?

Cannabis as a cancer treatment not only for it symptoms but as a possible cure has been hotly debated and researched for some time.

With both medical and recreational marijuana use now legal in Maine, today’s growers are combining green thumbs with advanced chemistry to produce varieties to treat everything from anxiety to pain.

But things have changed a bit since the days when marijuana was an illicit drug sold on the black market — including the potency of today’s marijuana.

“Back when I was a teenager I’d smoke a little bit on and off,” the 67-year-old said. “I joined the Air Force in 1969 and did not smoke much after that for many years until I got my medical marijuana card six years ago.”

New research paves the way for a new schizophrenia treatment, by testing the effect of a cannabis compound on rats. The study suggests that the cannabis-derived substance may improve schizophrenia-specific cognitive impairment, with none of the side effects that current medication has. 

Oil extraction is becoming a strength for Aurora Cannabis (TSXV:ACB), says Canaccord Genuity analyst Neil Maruoka. 

This morning, Aurora Cannabis and Radient Technologies announced what it described as positive results from a research joint venture into extraction. The companies say the results have led them to pursue commercialization. 

One of the most common claims about cannabis is that it relieves stress and helps one to relax. A new study demonstrates that this may well be true, but only at lower doses. The results are published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

Earlier this year, Florida legislators debated a bill that would expand the state's medical marijuana program, providing a wider range of cannabis treatments to a larger number of patients. Although most lawmakers supported the bill in some form, the two chambers of the Florida legislature were unable to agree on the details of the bill before the legislative session ran out.

Arkansas officials are anticipating that between 20,000 and 40,000 people will ask for permission to obtain medical marijuana.

The state Health Department’s chief lawyer, Robert Brech, told a joint meeting of the Senate and House Public Health Committee on Monday that running Arkansas’ medical marijuana program will cost about $1.5 million over the next year.

Medical marijuana registration cards will cost about $50. Under the proposed rules, an Arkansas driver’s license or state ID will be required to obtain one.

Arkansas’ population is about 3 million people. According to Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection spokeswoman Lora Rae Anderson, there are 18,232 medical marijuana patients in that state. Connecticut has a population of about 3.6 million.
