U.S border patrol warning travelers from Canada with marijuana

U.S. Customs and Border protection says border officers in Montana are intercepting travelers from Canada who are in possession of marijuana.

Two Americans were also recently arrested after admitting to having a marijuana pipe and biying marijuana in Canada. Hash oil and other declared items were also in their vehicle.

Border officials say although recreational marijuana may be legal in Canada and some U.S. states, it is reminding travelers that pot remains illegal in most of the U.S.

It says Canadians working in the marijuana industry coming to the U.S. for reasons unrelated to the marijuana industry will generally be allowed entry.

The misconceptions of marijuana

After years of debate, marijuana is finally legal in Canada. On Oct. 17, the first dispensaries opened across the country. This is a massive step toward not only making pot safer and more accessible, but also ensuring a degree of product quality that couldn’t be guaranteed in an unregulated market. That being said, I believe significant progress is still needed in regard to the elimination of the stigma associated with marijuana use.

Certainly, cannabis is by no means a product without fault. Just like everything else, overuse of marijuana can have serious side-effects. The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry noted that acute cannabis consumption at a young age has been linked with the inhibition of psychomotor skills, short-term memory, and minor cognitive functions.

Pot is a banned substance in sport despite little evidence it enhances performance

During his lengthy figure skating career, Dylan Moscovitch had to learn how to deal with immense pressure.

He also had to deal with the physical rigours of the sport. He navigated both successfully, retiring earlier this year after a career that included multiple podium finishes, Canadian championships and an Olympic silver medal.

There were lots of things Moscovitch did (all legal) during his career to gain a physical and mental edge.

Cannabis was never one of them.

"I don't think I would make it through a program," Moscovitch laughed when asked if he ever contemplated skating high.

Future of legal marijuana: Canadian greenhouses could mean cheaper, safer pot

The red-leafed blueberry bushes and greenhouses filled with tomatoes tell you that this small town south of Vancouver is a great place to grow things. A peculiar smell in the air tells you marijuana producers have already figured that out.

Across Canada, gleaming glass greenhouses that once grew produce for consumers are being retrofitted with air filters and light-blocking shades. Gone are the tomato plants and peppers. In their place are tens of thousands of sun-grown cannabis plants and hundreds of farmworkers transplanting, watering, trimming and packaging pot.

Experts say these highly sophisticated operations are the future of marijuana production internationally. The hope is that they will drive the price of pot so low, black marketeers give up.

Medical cannabis users anxious over supply shortages

Can't find any weed to buy for a party this weekend? Don't complain.

Canadians who use cannabis for medical reasons are being hit by shortages in a far worse way.

"It's actually more than a supply issue. Really, it's something of a health crisis now," said James O'Hara of the advocacy group Canadians for Fair Access to Medical Marijuana.

O'Hara says Canadians with cannabis prescriptions to help with seizures, anxiety and other serious health problems are emailing his organization, upset by "out of stock" signs at their regular provider's website or retail location.

"Unfortunately, there are no regulations in place to actually guarantee supply for the medical market," O'Hara said.

The first cannabis-derived drug is now on pharmacy shelves

Rather than simply moving forward, the cannabis industry has leapt ahead in 2018.

Arguably the biggest achievement for the industry is the legalization of recreation marijuana in Canada.

Long discussed as an option, lawmakers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau turned the idea into reality on Oct. 17, 2018.

Once initial supply shortages are dealt with, and pending the capacity ramp-up of dozens of growers, we could be looking at a multibillion-dollar industry.

Odds are cannabis will win in November

If voters in all four states approve their questions, 2018 will end with 32 medical marijuana states and 11 that allow cannabis for adults.

Political oddsmakers give cannabis reform advocates reason to be optimistic heading into the November 2018 election.

There is unprecedented support for marijuana legalization, and advocates say the midterm elections could mark the point of no return for a movement that has been gathering steam for years.
