Chaves County drops commissioner who supports marijuana farm

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) - The chairman of a joint city-county commission in Roswell who supported a controversial marijuana farm proposal has not been reappointed.

The Roswell Daily News reports that Royce "Pancho" Maples failed to get reappointed by the Chaves County commissioners Thursday but does not believe the loss is related to his pro-marijuana stance.

Maples chaired the Roswell-Chaves County Extraterritorial Zoning Commission and voted earlier this month in favor of converting an old dairy processing plant near Roswell into a medical marijuana farm.

Marijuana could treat PTSD under new legislation

× Marijuana could treat PTSD under new legislation

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (May 30, 2015) — Post-traumatic stress disorder would be considered a debilitating illness that can be treated with medically prescribed marijuana under legislation headed to Gov. Bruce Rauner.

The House approved state Rep. Lou Lang’s measure 68-36 on Saturday. The Skokie Democrat says marijuana can help people suffering from PTSD.

PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by a terrifying event that a person experiences or witnesses. There has been a lot of attention to it in the past decade because troops in combat are susceptible.

Neb. senators scrap medical marijuana for the year

LINCOLN (AP) — The sponsor of a proposal to legalize medical marijuana in Nebraska pulled the bill from the Legislature’s agenda on Wednesday, citing a flurry of other divisive votes senators have had to defend recently — including a repeal of the death penalty.

Sen. Tommy Garrett of Bellevue asked Wednesday to hold his bill until June 15, ensuring senators will not revisit the debate until next year.

The move came one day after the Omaha chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws filed a petition to put the medical marijuana on the ballot for voters to decide.

Silk Road's Ross Ulbricht sentenced to life

Ross Ulbricht, creator of the underground website Silk Road, which let users anonymously buy and sell anything from drugs to hacking tutorials, was sentenced Friday to life in prison after he made a tearfulplea for leniency.

Ulbricht, who is 31, was convicted in February on seven counts ranging from money laundering to drug trafficking. He could have been sentenced to only 20 years.

U.S. District Judge Katherine B. Forrest was clear that she was making an example of Ulbricht in part to deter others from committing similar crimes.

"There must be no doubt that no one is above the law," Forrest said. "You, as the defendant, have to pay the price."

Report Explores Marijuana Policy in Milwaukee

Mitch Teich with Public Policy Forum president Rob Henken.

Members of a Milwaukee Common Council committee took up a proposal Thursday that could reduce the penalties for first-time offenses for possession of small amounts of marijuana. Advocates say reforms are needed to address disparities in how marijuana laws are enforced and their impact on offenders.

"When you look at the percentage of the population that is African-American versus the percentage of offenders who are actually being picked up by police in Milwaukee and prosecuted, there is a disparity there," says Public Policy Forum president Rob Henken.

NEWBERRY SPRINGS, Calif. -
