Marijuana commission set to meet in Georgia

A state commission on medical marijuana will soon hold its first meeting in Atlanta.

The Commission on Medical Cannabis was created by a law passed this year permitting people with certain medical conditions to legally possess cannabis oil in-state with their doctors' approval. It meets June 16 at the state Capitol.

The commission includes Republican state Rep. Allen Peake of Macon.

Some still want laws permitting the federally prohibited plant's growth in Georgia. They say the recent legislation in Georgia doesn't protect people while transporting the oil from other states where it can be produced and sold.

Legalized marijuana would be eliminated under a Christie presidency

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie vowed Sunday to eliminate legalized marijuana in states like Colorado and Washington if he's elected president.

The governor, speaking on CBS' "Face the Nation," said his administration would use federal rules that outlaw marijuana to clamp down on states that legalized recreational pot use.

"Yes sir," Christie told host John Dickerson when asked whether he'd go after Colorado and Washington.

"If you were president would you return the federal prosecutions in the states of Colorado, Washington states?" Dickerson asked.

"Yes," Christie said.

"So, if somebody's enjoying that now in their state, if you're president, that's getting turned off?" Dickerson continued.

Louisiana may become the first state in the South to legalize medical marijuana

Late Thursday, the Louisiana House of Representatives passed a bill that would allow for the legalization of medical marijuana in that state, and the signs are that Republican Governor Bobby Jindal will sign it.

“Our view on medical marijuana was it had to be supervised and had to be a legitimate medical purpose and this bill meets that criteria,” the governor said while the bill and its amendments were being debated in late May.

Ohio Legislators working to prevent rise of marijuana monopolies from pro-pot plans

COLUMBUS -- Ohio lawmakers are beginning to hear some of the objections raised against plans to legalize marijuana, and it might not be for the reason you think.

According to a report by the Columbus Dispatch, bipartisan support is building to suppress any legislation that could use constitutional amendments to create monopolies.

As currently written, the leading pro-pot proposal -- submitted by ResponsibleOhio -- would change the Ohio Constitution to allow 10 investment groups the exclusive right to grow and sell marijuana wholesale.

Rauner's office on Friday announced Joseph Wright has been named to head the program. He's currently assistant general counsel in the governor's office.

Wright succeeds Bob Morgan, who stepped down last month to go into private law practice.

Wright has already been working with the state agencies involved in the medical marijuana program as a liaison to their legal teams. He's also helped the governor's office with Freedom of Information Act requests.

New Zealand: DHB delays treatment application for teenager in coma

Alex Renton, 19, of Nelson is in an induced coma in Wellington Hospital while his family fights to get him medicinal marijuana.

The bureaucratic delay in treating a teenager in an induced coma in Wellington Hospital is bordering on unethical, Labour MP Damien O'Connor says.

Alex Renton, 19, of Nelson, has been in hospital since early April and remains in "status epilepticus",  a kind of prolonged seizure.

Capital & Coast District Health Board decided late on Friday to apply to the Ministry of Health for approval to use a marijuana extract to treat him.

His mother, Rose Renton, is begging the Government to approve treatment for her son, who has already endured more than 20 medications that have not worked.

Plan to expunge records of marijuana lawbreakers should go up in smoke

Even if we were inclined to support the legalization of marijuana in Ohio – we aren’t – a companion initiative that would result in the expungement of criminal records stemming from marijuana convictions is a definite deal-breaker for us. We have long opposed the cleansing of court records because we strongly believe there must be consequences to breaking the law.

In the May Democratic primary for mayor of Struthers, The Vindicator chose not to make an endorsement because both the candidates, Danny Thomas Jr. and Ronald A. Carcelli, had their criminal histories wiped clean.

The survey of 701 Arizonans was conducted from April 29-May 15 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8%.
