UK: The government is silencing its own drug experts

The government's drug experts could not be described as radical libertarians. They are a conservative bunch, assessing drug harms and usually reaching a decision which recommends maintaining or adopting a prohibitionist stance against various narcotics. But even they have now become too liberal for the Home Office.

BOSTON — Gov. Charlie Baker has issued a one-time, temporary waiver aimed at helping the state's first marijuana dispensary begin selling pot for medicinal purposes.

The waiver applies to Alternative Therapy Group of Salem.

Under regulations adopted by Massachusetts, samples of medicinal marijuana must be examined for cannabinoids, solvents, mycotoxins and other microbiological contaminants along with heavy metals and pesticides.

Alternative Therapy Group submitted samples, but labs in Massachusetts were unable to test for seven of the 18 mandated pesticides.

Strict drug laws put expats at risk

Thursday’s arrest of a high-profile Toyota Motor Corp. executive highlights the danger globetrotters can face bringing psychotropic or other medications into nations where they are banned.

Julie Hamp, named Toyota’s first female managing officer in April, faces drug-smuggling charges after having oxycodone pills sent to her from the United States, said a spokesman for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, declining to be named on policy grounds. Her arrest was front-page news in Japan, coming amid a widely publicized crackdown on the sale of mood-altering herbs that previously fell outside the nation’s strict laws against recreational drugs.

PATRICK COUNTY, Va. — More than 30,000 marijuana plants were discovered after investigators followed a trail in a remote area of Bull Mountain in Patrick County, Virginia. Wednesday’s discovery was largest of its kind in Virginia history, law enforcement indicated.

“There were crude trail systems cut throughout the mountain side, each one was hand cut by the suspects to avoid detection,” Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith said. “At some points, we had 25 officers from our agency, the Virginia State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) in the grow area at once counting and recovering plants.”

Ghana reggae star to face lawmakers in parliament after dope slur

ACCRA Popular Ghanaian reggae singer "Blakk Rasta" has been summoned to appear before a parliamentary committee after he said that most of the West African country's legislators use marijuana, officials said on Friday.

Speaker Doe Adzaho has issued an order for the musician, whose real name is Abubakar Ahmed, to answer to lawmakers for damaging the reputation of parliament.

The 40-year-old musician, famous in Ghana for a song eulogizing Barack Obama that earned him a rare dinner meeting with the U.S. president when he visited Accra in 2009, said he was misunderstood.

Why is Israel cracking down on medical marijuana?

This trend, which contradicts growing global trends and public debate in Israel, has led many to question whether the Health Ministry is colluding with pharmaceutical companies.

For Eitan, 25, medical cannabis is nothing short of a miracle. He's been using it for quite some time now to combat the nausea, vomiting, excruciating pain and weight loss caused by the pancreatic cancer he suffers from. "Without the cannabis, I honestly cannot function," he says.

Here is the draft law for the legalization of cannabis in Italy

The parliamentary intergroup for the legalization of cannabis has developed the cornerstones of the draft law to be presented to the rooms: the right to self, cannabis social club on the Spanish model, and state monopoly with regard to sales. Some details may change in future meetings, but the general structure of the bill will be this.

Objective Intergroup (which exceeded 150 accessions between MPs and senators of various opinions) to turn the draft into a real bill as soon as possible and look for the scheduling for the parliamentary debate before the summer.

Australia: Family demands action to advance cannabis reforms

POLITICS, not a lack of evidence, is slowing down medical cannabis reform in Queensland, according to Rhonda Miles.

Mrs Miles and the Medical Cannabis Advisory Group Queensland are hoping to gain support for a proposal which would provide an amnesty for patients as medical cannabis trials move forward.

This would mean patients like Mrs Miles' son Lachlan, who suffers from uncontrolled seizures, would have a chance at legally gaining access to the drug in the interim.

The group has submitted their formal Proposition 270A to the Queensland Premier and every MP in Queensland and plan on launching another petition to the Queensland Parliament.
