This State Could Become the First to Legalize Marijuana Without a Ballot Initiative

The marijuana movement has been practically unstoppable for two decades now. Since 1996, nearly two dozen states have legalized the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes, and four states (along with Washington D.C.) now allow adults over the age of 21 to purchase marijuana for recreational purposes in licensed dispensaries. The thought of this would have been nothing short of laughable even as recently as a decade ago.

Access to medical marijuana means new potential treatment pathways for patients with glaucoma and certain types of terminal cancers. For states legalizing retail marijuana, it means added revenue that's primarily being used to fund education, bolster law enforcement, and go toward drug awareness programs.

Arkansas AG rejects 7th marijuana ballot title while separate title gathers signatures

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) —

Arkansas' attorney general has now rejected seven marijuana ballot titles since taking office, the latest one on Wednesday. Little Rock Attorney David Couch, who filed two of them, plans to file an amended version next week.

Most of the reasons given by Attorney General Leslie Rutledge for her rejections were ambiguous language according to her rejection letters. Rutledge's Spokesman Judd Deere tells Channel 7 News she has made it clear that her rejections have no reflection of her views on medicinal or recreational marijuana.

Draft Anchorage marijuana license rules ban marijuana use in retail stores

A ban on marijuana bars and social clubs and random marijuana testing for pesticides or other harmful substances at retail stores are among the more contentious elements of Anchorage’s draft cannabis business license regulations released this week.

Anchorage officials have been developing a local license for marijuana businesses as a way to give local government more control over enforcement. But industry leaders have said a local license would be redundant to a state license and overly burdensome, and have promised to fight it in the coming weeks.

Democratic Debate: How High Are The Candidates On Legalizing Marijuana?

As Bernie Sanders continues to cut Hillary Clinton’s lead en route to the Democratic presidential primaries, Martin O’Malley joins his fellow candidates for tonight’s Democratic debate. While the candidates will have plenty to say about very serious issues like health care, immigration, and unemployment, a politician’s stance on the use of medical marijuana and the legalization of recreational pot has become a more common issue of interest. Now that many states are legalizing medicinal (and sometimes recreational) marijuana, and members of Congress are introducing legislation to end the federal prohibition on medical cannabis, it’s a question all candidates must have an answer for.

Toledo marijuana law abolishing jail time, fines in effect

Part of a recently adopted ordinance in northwest Ohio that abolished jail terms and fines for possessing small amounts of marijuana is already in effect despite a pending legal challenge.

Toledo residents in September approved an initiative that wrote a new ordinance into the city's municipal code aimed at decriminalizing marijuana and hashish possession, The Blade reported (http://bit.ly/1l150CO).

Both drugs are illegal under the Sensible Marijuana Ordinance, but Toledo's new ordinance reduces all penalties, regardless of quantity.

Man convicted of drug trafficking through marijuana dispensaries

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — The Justice Department says a 37-year-old man who tried to hide illegal drug dealing behind a medical marijuana dispensary was convicted on two federal drug charges.

U.S. Attorney Annette L. Hayes says Lance Edward Gloor was convicted by a jury Friday in Tacoma of conspiracy to distribute marijuana and manufacturing marijuana.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict on conspiracy to commit money laundering and acquitted Gloor of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Court records say law enforcement agents have been investigating Gloor and a business associated since 2010, when they searched Gloor’s home and found over 70 pot plants and a firearm.

Santa Barbara County staff seeking ban on medical marijuana

A plan to prohibit medical marijuana cultivation and delivery within Santa Barbara County’s unincorporated areas could move forward Tuesday if the Board of Supervisors follows a staff recommendation to do so.

“Several California cities and counties have reported negative impacts from marijuana cultivation, processing, and distribution activities, including illegal sales and distribution of marijuana, trespassing and theft,” said Supervising Planner Allen Bell, in a county staff report. “In addition, marijuana plants can produce strong odors that may be offensive to some people.”

The staff recommendations follow a new state law known as the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act, enacted by the Legislature in September and signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown.

Exempt smart drugs and nutmeg from drugs law, MPs suggest

Not a smart move? Nutmeg, church incense and some so-called smart drugs have been proposed as exceptions to a new drug law that will be debated by UK Members of Parliament on 20 January.

The Psychoactive Substances Bill is intended to ban legal highs – chemicals designed to mimic the effects of illegal drugs such as ecstasy and cannabis. They are usually sold online or in high-street stores called head shops.
