Federal bill would protect medical marijuana states, provide access to vets

A bipartisan group of senators and representatives have reintroduced legislation that would enable states to set their own medical marijuana policies.

That is at odds with a letter U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions sent to congressional leaders, in which he asked that federal medical marijuana protections be reversed.

Booker addressed the Sessions letter, saying the Attorney General “misrepresents the facts” on medical marijuana.

California looks to boost marijuana, block immigration jails

California lawmakers voted Thursday to set rules for the state's nascent marijuana industry and to quash the growth of federal immigration detention as part of a $125 billion state budget lawmakers approved for the next fiscal year.

Lawmakers sent Gov. Jerry Brown a measure merging the state's longstanding medical marijuana law with the much more permissive rules voters approved last year to legalize pot sales to people 21 and older. The state will develop standards for organic marijuana, allow pot samples at county fairs and permit home deliveries.

Montana medical marijuana dispensary owner sentenced to federal prison

The former owner of Montana Buds, a statewide medical marijuana dispensary network, was sentenced Thursday to 18 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to a drug charge.

Charlton Victor Campbell was sentenced by Chief District Court Judge Dana Christensen in U.S. District Court in Missoula. Following his incarceration, he will be under supervised release for an additional five years.

In March, Campbell pleaded guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to manufacture and distribute marijuana after signing a plea agreement with federal prosecutors that dismissed three other charges.

Under the agreement, Campbell also forfeited $30,000 in cash and gave up the Montana Buds properties in Bozeman to the federal government.

The Super Heroes Of The Cannabis Industry

Marijuana legalization is a reality for so many Americans now. We have come far, and are closer than ever before to federally legal marijuana. It’s a vastly shared sentiment that we are years away from federal legalization and there is nothing that can stop the tidewater.

Weed legalization is now an American reality. What we are witnessing now is merely the tipping point, coming after decades of foundational work by legalization advocates that didn't always see a light at the end of the tunnel. Here are some of the heroes of the pro-cannabis movement whose pioneering work shaped the shift we are seeing today.

US Government Wants To Leave Health Care Reform To The States

In 2010, US President Barack Obama fulfilled a longtime Democratic Party dream of starting the nation on the road to universal health care with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (usually referred to as the ACA or, more familiarly, Obamacare). The current president wants to retrace those steps and go in a different direction: Let the states do it. Some are already trying.

Why the marijuana industry should worry about Sessions' letter to Congress

A letter from Attorney General Jeff Sessions to leaders of Congress is the most recent in a long list of signals that the Trump administration is trying to crack down on marijuana sales.

Sessions sent a letter to leaders of Congress in May asking them to allow the Justice Department to prosecute businesses and individuals in states where medical marijuana is legal.

Medical marijuana businesses in PA have a cold, hard cash problem

One of the chief concerns about constructing medical marijuana dispensaries and growing facilities in Philadelphia is security. In other states that have legalized medical cannabis, growing sites have become targets for break-ins — but not necessarily because fiending burglars want to get their hands on sweet, medically acceptable kush.

Dispensaries and growers are often targets because of how most of them conduct business: Cash. Most major banks won’t work with marijuana-related businesses for fear of running afoul of federal regulations that stipulate marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug. And that’s expected to create real problems for marijuana-related businesses here in Pennsylvania, as it has elsewhere.

Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein Has a Hard Line Stance Against Marijuana

The United States marijuana industry has come under attack and this attack is being fueled by false statements and claims from various members of the White House administration.

Yesterday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein added fuel to the fire when he appeared before the Senate and House Appropriations committees.

Rosenberg called marijuana an unlawful drug from a legal and scientific perspective, and said it is properly scheduled under Schedule I. He also said that the Cole Memo remains its policy for the moment and that there may be an opportunity to review it in the future.
