Michigan Marijuana Activists Shine At National Events

The national marijuana movement has some established personalities and Conference regulars, but more and more of those personalities are Michigan residents.

The Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) conference in Washington, D.C. saw a broad contingent of Michigan speakers and attendees- and will again; a recent conference in Las Vegas had at least one Michigander on the microphone; and it’s been a busy year for one of our community’s brightest couples.

Battle over Tampa marijuana journal firm Cannavoices lands in courtroom

TAMPA — With its website promoting stories or videos such as "Did William Shakespeare smoke cannabis?" and "Wholesale cannabis prices sky high in Colorado," Cannavoices was supposed to be a hip look at the legal marijuana industry.

The Tampa company, which produces magazine, which focuses primarily on medical marijuana, launched with a party at the Station House restaurant in St. Petersburg during the summer.

Just four months later, the players who created Cannavoices are ensnared in a legal battle over control of a fledgling company now mired in competing claims about the misuse of corporate assets. The magazinehas published just one issue, and postings on the main page of the website, cannavoices, have not been updated since August.

Truro Herbal Co. growing ever closer to medical marijuana production

TRURO - Production of Nova Scotia’s first, legalized medicinal marijuana grow operation is expected to begin next summer if all goes according to plan.

The Truro Herbal Co. (The THC) has received Stage 3 approval from Health Canada under the federal medical marijuana production regulations.

Company president Evan Price said he is hoping production will be underway by next July or August.

“It’s not just something that you do overnight,” he said, of the heavily scrutinized approval process required to set up a legalized marijuana grow op.

The THC is now reviewing security system protocols and developing a construction plan for the new facility to be built in the Truro Business Park.

As pot grows up, design enters the scene

The new Ajoya cannabis store is banking its success on high design. It hired Colorado's top architect, Jeff Sheppard.

When marijuana first became legal, design was the last thing on the mind of retailers. They just wanted their stores open in a hurry so they could start turning all that bud into bucks.

The results, visually speaking, were disastrous. Early pot shops looked a lot like bail-bond operations or check cashing centers: simple, white rooms with metal folding chairs, maybe an Ikeaprint on the wall. Buyers interfaced with sellers though bullet-proof glass windows, as if no one, on either side of the transaction, was trustworthy.

Medical marijuana company in Truro buying land to build facility

A medical marijuana company in Truro, N.S., says it has received security approvals from Health Canada and is moving ahead with plans to build a facility approximately 17,000 square feet in size.

On Monday, The Truro Herbal Company, or The THC, will officially acquire 2.5 hectares of land in the town's industrial park, says president Evan Price. He says the company was waiting for Health Canada to finish security checks before finalizing the land transfer.

The company plans to build a two-storey facility with 6.7-metre ceilings.

"You have to build basically a bank that's wrapped in a jail," Price said.

After submitting a proposal more than 2,000 pages long, the company received Stage 3 approval from the federal government this week, he says.
