Cannabis: Small Growers Will Soon Have Industry Scale Processing in Redwood Valley

An uncertain future can breed both optimism and apprehension, and five months after the passage of Proposition 64, nothing is as uncertain as how California’s budding recreational cannabis industry will develop in the years to come. Cannabis growers in the Emerald Triangle are eager to inaugurate the coming era of fully legal weed, but they sometimes express an anxiety as old as the Industrial Revolution.

Some cannabis entrepreneurs worry that legalization of commercial recreational marijuana will invite investment capital from outside the area to establish giant, vertically integrated corporate behemoths with economies of scale that will enable them to fatally undercut and crush independent local growers. Think the Standard Oil or Walmart of weed.

You know what helps with tension? Weed.

There's a lot of cool stuff going on in the Oregon cannabis world right now.  Here are the seven trends and products we're most stoked about.

Uber of X: GreenRush Is the Uber of Cannabis

Cannabis, a favorite relaxation method of choice for some, has slowly become less stigmatized within the past few years.

After it became illegal in the United States through the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, the business of selling cannabis went mostly underground. Not until 2004 did cannabis become legal for non-medical use in certain areas of the country.

Jamaica: Ganja Industry Development Crucial — G2K

Generation 2000 (G2K), the young professional affiliate of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), today said that all government ministries and agencies should work effectively together in building out a medical, therapeutic and scientific based cannabis industry while promoting a strong and balanced public education campaign that outlines both the benefits and risks associated with the plant.

“After the amendments to the Dangerous Drugs Act in 2015, thereby allowing for the development of an industry, no stone should be left unturned in ensuring that it be made a reality. Several countries, including our neighbour the Cayman Islands, have rushed past Jamaica in an industry that Jamaica has a natural advantage”, said G2K Vice President, Edson  Carr.

Power of the Pot Business

“Cannabis is the next great American industry,” says Troy Dayton. As CEO of Arcview Group, Dayton works with over 650 high-net-worth investors who have poured more than $100 million into cannabis-related startups since 2010.

He calls early investors in the burgeoning marijuana industry “pioneers” who are hoping to stake their claims in the Green Rush.

Revenues from the US marijuana industry are expected to mushroom from $6.7 billion in 2016 to over $21 billion by 2021, according to Arcview Group research. Dayton predicts that explosive growth will happen, whether or not President Trump cracks down on legalized marijuana.

Freeing up Ganja: Jamaica and Canada

April 20 is World Marijuana Day.

It's just over two years since Jamaica decriminalised small quantities. And Canada was set yesterday to announce what's likely to be a bolder experiment.

So what has changed, and what hasn't?

The big change in Jamaica is for small-scale users. Possession of up to two ounces is no longer a criminal offence. You can grow up to five plants at home. And smoking in public is a minor matter, with a fine equivalent to TT$25.

For perhaps a few hundred-thousand Jamaicans those reforms make a huge difference. They remove the daily risk of arrest, prison, a substantial fine—and a criminal record which blocks some employment or a US visa.
