Weed a $2.4M loser in Manitoba

Provincial cannabis wholesaler Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries earned nearly $27 million in cannabis revenue during the 2018-19 fiscal year ended March 31, according to the Crown corporation's newly-released annual report. But that wasn't enough to deliver positive net cannabis revenue to the province, which says it lost more than $2.4 million on cannabis during the same period.

‘It's messy’: How investors can play the legalization of cannabis edibles

The new wave of cannabis legalization in Canada was met with optimism from investors on Thursday, but analysts warn it’s still too early to bet on the market’s rejuvenation.

Trapped in a bear market for months, cannabis stocks flashed some of their old potential as market leaders such as Canopy Growth Corp., OrganiGram Holdings Inc., MediPharm Labs Corp., Cronos Group Inc. and Aurora Cannabis Inc. each closed between five and eight per cent up. Hexo Corp., which was battered last week after significantly lowering guidance, gained nearly 20 per cent to close at $3.81.

It's never clean from the beginning. There's going to be a lot of starts and stops for the next two to three quarters

City has spent more than $6.9M on cannabis-related costs since legalization

The city says it has incurred more than $6.9 million in cannabis-related costs since legalization last year — an amount that does not include spending on preparations undertaken in the six months prior to legal weed.

The cost of responding to legalization has so far exceeded the $3.84 million that was provided to Calgary through the province’s Municipal Cannabis Transition Program, according to city data.

Policing and enforcement costs make up the lion’s share of the city’s spending, but firefighters, bylaw and transit officers have also been tapped to respond to cannabis-related issues.

City lawyers and staff working in business licensing and building regulations have also been closely involved in the file.

B.C. public safety minister says cannabis edibles not in stores til January

B.C.’s solicitor general says the province wants to see as much small-scale production as possible for marijuana edibles to allow for regional economic development.

“I don’t want it to be dominated by one or two large-scale variety of producers,” Mike Farnworth said Friday. “I think there’s room in this market for a considerable variety or product and a considerable variety of producers.”

He said that while provinces are responsible for retail operations and enforcement, the licensed production of cannabis, including edibles, is decided by the federal government, and any changes to regulations will become apparent if a new government takes office after Monday’s federal election.

Ontario pot smokers flock to black market a year after legalization

With just two dozen stores scattered throughout the province, along with the government-run and online-only Ontario Cannabis Store, residents seeking a high rely mainly illicit sources of pot a year after the federal government legalized its consumption.

Muddy waters ahead for Cannabis edibles, according to Dalhousie University professor

While cannabis edibles are now technically legal, a Dalhousie University professor doesn't expect to see any legal product available before mid December.

Dr. Sylvain Charlebois says although the product became legal on Thursday, October 17th, Health Canada has requested two months for products to be approved before they are sold for consumption.

"As of Thursday, companies can submit a proposal to Health Canada for approval," Charlebois says.

One major area of concern for Health Canada is surrounding cannabis edibles that might appeal to children and teens, which Charlebois says is being dealt with by the Federal government.

Made-in-Ottawa device puts testing in the hands of pot producers

Researchers at the University of Ottawa are developing a hand-held device they hope will revolutionize cannabis production by giving growers the ability to test the ratio of THC to CBD in their plants.

"It's a very quick, easy and low-cost test," Adam Shuhendler, an assistant professor in the school's chemistry department, told the CBC's Ottawa Morning.

"Push a button and out on the screen comes the ratio of CBD and THC."

Our goal really is accessibility.- Adam Shuhendler, University of Ottawa

Pot consumers will experience different effects depending on the ratio of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to cannabidiol (CBD).

Cannabis 2.0 is upon us, but are retailers ready for the influx of new products?

Sitting on a bench outside the Hunny Pot, the first cannabis retailer to open its doors in Toronto, three friends spark a pre-rolled joint they bought inside only moments earlier.

This scene wouldn’t have been possible little more than a year ago. Smoking cannabis in public wasn’t legal, neither was buying it in brick-and-mortar shops. Back then, the retail space that now houses dozens of dry leaf and oil products was only used to host the occasional pop-event after long-time tenant New Era, a hat retailer, vacated it.

We're going to have to evolve on a weekly basis
