First Reading granted in land re-designation for cannabis facility in Clearwater County: AB

Clearwater County Council has granted the first reading to a bylaw to clear the way for a 55,000 sq. foot micro-climate controlled cannabis facility southeast of Caroline.

Element GP Incorporated submitted an application to have the 157-acre location along Highway 22, just north of Secondary Highway 587, re-zoned from Agricultural to Light Industrial.

The applicants say the facility aims to source all electrical power, heat and air conditioning from Shell’s Caroline Gas Plant, which is only six and a half kilometers away.

The facility plans on using complex technology to destroy odor, recycle water, and a controlled CO2 system to improve plant photosynthesis.

Cannabis testing: The space between producer and consumer

Long gone are the days of lighting up whatever bud you scored from a friend.

As Canada sloughs off its prohibition skin, cannabis consumers are adopting higher standards for products they’re ingesting. Things like mould and pesticides, which compromise product quality and health, are no longer going to be tolerated in a fully legal landscape, and testing demands for these contaminants is skyrocketing.

Prelegalization medical users and licensed producers (LPs) are already acclimated to Health Canada’s testing standards, but a large portion of the recreational community is only just starting to understand the process that pot undergoes before deemed fit for consumption.

How does cannabis smoke compare to tobacco smoke?

Science still out on how harmful cannabis smoke is to people.

With Edmonton city council considering relaxed rules around cannabis consumption in public, the science is still out on how second-hand cannabis smoke might affect people.

Fiona Clement's research was brought up in council committee discussions around the proposed rules, which would allow people to smoke cannabis outside in public places like parks and sidewalks. The new cannabis rules would be similar to current tobacco bylaws.

There simply isn't enough published research to know how cannabis smoke compares to tobacco smoke, said Fiona Clement, the director of the Health Technology Assessment Unit at the U of C.

Online tools to help police prepare for legal cannabis

'They're going to have to look at this substance differently'.

The legalization of cannabis will require police officers to adjust their thinking, and the Canadian Police Knowledge Network is helping with the transition.

The Charlottetown-based group is creating some online tools to help train front-line officers in dealing with the legal change.

CPKN president Sandy Sweet said old habits will take time to change.

"There's some critical thinking aspects of policing that. Police officers are trained and they cultivate these habits during their career. They're going to have to look at this substance differently," said Sweet.

NL business banking on people needing pots to grow pot

That's where stores like the Greenhouse come in, though they can't sell the plants themselves.

When federal cannabis legalization comes into effect some time this summer, individuals will be allowed to grow up to four plants for personal use. In the meantime, Shawn Dolter — owner of the Greenhouse in Little Rapids — is fielding a lot of questions from curious, and somewhat sheepish, would-be small-scale pot farmers.

"We're all about do-it-yourself," Dolter told the Corner Brook Morning Show

"Basically, we want to make sure that they can grow the best plant possible in their own home environment."
