The deals reflect efforts by Canada's marijuana industry to treat cannabis as a form of therapy. They also reflect ongoing efforts to expand in the global medical market. The global medical market, executives say, represents a huge sales opportunity.

Since last year, when Canada legalized recreational pot in full, the nation became a kind of country-sized lab for how that new business would play out. That market could reach as much as $5.1 billion in annual sales by 2020, according to one estimate – though some predictions are higher, especially ones that include spending on accessories and growing supplies.

The owner of a proposed aquaponics farm in St. Stephen is hoping to start growing medical cannabis this year.

The business was announced in 2016, but at the time, Tanner Stewart had planned to grow "leafy green produce," along with farming fish.

As the demand for medical cannabis increased, so did Stewart's vision for his business.

He said he saw a need for organically grown, sustainable cannabis.

"So I pivoted into a cannabis crop," Stewart said.

How the farm works

Stewart's aquaponics farm has a system that sees fish tanks and plants being farmed in the same facility.

Stewart will be farming tilapia but use the water from the tanks to water the cannabis.

Marijuana (cannabis) for medical and recreational purposes is legal in Canada now.

The annual demand for the formerly evil weed is estimated to be as high as hundreds of thousands of kilograms, which, when sold, could produce billions of dollars in honest and upstanding revenue.

Under the 2018 Cannabis Act, only producers who are licensed by Health Canada are allowed to grow the product. As of October 2018, when recreational marijuana became legal in Canada, there were approximately 120 such licensed producers in the country, some large and some small.

This is the challenge for an industry seeking to win over new or inexperienced users as legalization spreads through North America and around the world. A US$255 million deal to convert sugar into cannabis-chemicals is opening the door to an era of pot without plants.

Amyris Inc. already works with genetically modified yeast that excrete designer molecules to make sweeteners and skin-care products. Now it plans to use that fermentation technology to convert sugarcane syrup into the active ingredients found in marijuana, the California-based company said in a statement Tuesday. Those ingredients can be used in consumer products ranging from beverages to skin creams and deodorant.
