Ban cannabis-infused soft drinks, public health directors urge Quebec

Quebec’s public-health directors are warning that the provincial government’s proposed regulations restricting edible cannabis products contain “grey areas … that undermine the effectiveness” of the new rules.

In July, the Coalition Avenir Québec government announced that it will ban the sale of cannabis-based chocolates, candies and “any other product attractive to minors.” However, the draft regulations do not specifically prohibit the sale of cannabis-infused soft drinks and juices and, in fact, would “establish that an edible cannabis product in liquid form cannot contain THC (the main active ingredient) that is greater than 5 milligrams per package.”

UNB researcher receives grant to explore medical potential of cannabis

A biochemist at the University of New Brunswick says the legalization of recreational cannabis has opened the door for scientists to find new medical uses for the plant.

Yang Qu says cannabis is rapidly being transformed from an underground species into an industrial crop that awaits medical and agricultural development.

"In the past the major driving force of the breeding was to get a higher THC content, because THC is the major psychoactive component in cannabis," Qu said Monday. "Recreational use of cannabis is mainly because of the component THC.

Cannabis companies Therapix and Destiny to merge

Nasdaq-listed Israel-based cannabis company Therapix Biosciences Ltd. has signed a letter of intent for a proposed merger with Edmonton, Canada-based cannabis company Destiny Biosciences Global Corp., the former The merged company will focus on Therapix's technology and assets pertaining to clinical-stage pharmaceutical applications of cannabis, and will include Destiny's genomics-based cannabis breeding techniques and development capabilities, according to the company’s statement.

The companies expect a definitive agreement of the merger to be signed during the third quarter of 2019, subject to certain closing conditions. Upon closing, current Therapix equity holders are expected to own approximately 32% of the combined company, the company said.
