Rock Island grow house ready for medical marijuana patients

Thousands of cannabis plants are sprouting — and they have been since July — inside a nondescript warehouse off Andalusia Road in Rock Island.

Green Thumb Industries, or GTI, a Chicago-based medical pot company, won rights to operate a Rock Island cultivation center in February. It became the first facility this summer to earn the state’s OK to grow the plant.

“We got through all the inspections and requirements and now we’re ready to go,” Ben Kovler, GTI's CEO, said. “It’s been a long journey, but our wait pales in comparison to the wait patients have had to endure.”

But that wait may soon be over, as well.

State officials said Thursday that Illinois will begin its first medical marijuana sales within the next two weeks.

Home Renovation Project: Hemp-based Render improves Insulation

A material made by mixing hemp with lime and water forms a new layer of insulation around this house in Belgium, as part of a renovation by Ghent studio Martens Van Caimere Architecten.

Known as hempcrete, the hemp-based render was applied in thick layers to all four walls of the small house to help it retain heat and make the structure more weather-resistant. The result is a textured surface with a similar appearance to rammed earth.

According to architect Nikolaas Martens, one of the two co-founders of Martens Van Caimere Architecten, the material offers a similar but more sustainable and economical solution than concrete.

Oregon company hopes marijuana canning technology takes off

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

As the cannabis industry grows, competition for customers is fierce.

An Ashland-based company says their technology can help set products apart.

N2 Packaging LLC seals and preserves marijuana in cans using nitrogen, claiming the product has a longer shelf life.

“They know it's going to be good for as long as they keep it in their dresser, or the cabinet or wherever. It's not going to go stale or dry on them,” said Luke Olsen, the company’s retail sales manager.

Olsen and a partner have their own product line called The Factory.

N2 Packaging received a patent to hermetically seal controlled substances in an altered environment last October.
