Marijuana advocates sceptical about Canada path to legal pot

Canada will soon introduce legislation to legalise recreational marijuana. Pot advocates are not as happy as you might think.

The Cannabis Culture dispensary in downtown Toronto gets a steady stream of foot traffic around noon on a weekday.

But Marc Emery, who helped set up the franchise that flouts Canadian drug laws by selling pot to anyone over 19, is annoyed.

The dispensary had been raided the day before by Toronto police.

"It's the government's intention to legalise it. So why is the government still arresting people?" he asks.

Mr Emery is just one of many owners of illegal marijuana storefronts that have mushroomed in cities across Canada after the federal Liberals were elected in 2015.

Cannabis Stocks: Trends and Opportunities

Cannabis stocks ended the week of November 25th on a high note with most companies under Technical420’s coverage in positive territory, and some moving significantly off their weekly lows.

Although we remain cautiously optimistic, most stocks in the cannabis sector have come down from their pre-election highs. While many cannabis stocks are still attractive investments, recent volatility has caused us to exit several positions in Technical420’s Mock Portfolio.

We want to highlight several cannabis companies that have made significant price movements over the last week and will provide our thoughts on such movements.

Why This Cannabis Oil Has Lawmakers Stumped

Not all products made from cannabidiol, a chemical compound found in marijuana, are the same—not only does the potency vary from product to product, but so too does its legality in the United States. In large part, where the CBD oil, as it’s called, is derived from makes a big difference.

Legalized Marijuana Could Drive A New Tech Boom

The revolution to legalize marijuana is marching slowly—but steadily—forward. Half of the states in the United States plus the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana or cannabis for medical use, and more states are legalizing recreational use with each election cycle. In the recent election, California, Nevada, Massachusetts and Maine all passed ballot measures to legalize for recreational use.

Even in states where marijuana is technically illegal, law enforcement tends to look the other way for all but the most egregious offenses. The reality is that there is no common sense argument that allows for cigarettes and alcohol to be legal while marijuana is not. Both cigarettes and alcohol are verifiably more harmful than marijuana.

Drug Testing: Tech Firms Adopt 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Stance on Cannabis Use

Your boss may not care if you smoke weed when you’re not at work. But then again, you might get fired.

While marijuana is now legal after the passage of Proposition 64, Northern California businesses are taking widely different approaches to testing to see if you use the drug.

If you design computer chips at Intel or web pages at Google, you won’t be tested. But if you drive a Samtrans bus or operate a crane for a construction company, you will be.

At UC Berkeley, professors aren’t tested, but campus police officers are. The network company Cisco Systems doesn’t test; the construction company Cisco does.

6 New Social Apps to Help Cannabis Lovers Find Each Other

With marijuana now a legal business in many states, enthusiasts want to meet online like everybody else.

Marijuana has always been a shared experience. As a prohibited substance, users gathered together, sometimes in the shadows. Because it was once relatively scarce and expensive, it was passed around in private. And, because use enhanced experience, the smokers needed someone to listen.

How The New Marijuana Breathalyzers Work

New technology will allow officers to test for marijuana on someone’s breath, and could save lives.

One version of the pot breathalyzer is being developed by a chemist at the University of California Berkely. Matt Francis has been working on the project for the last 18 months.  “We had to develop some new chemistry that can actually be done.  It was not obvious when we started that we could tag this.”  The technology would allow officers to be able to detect marijuana on someone’s breath and determine if they had smoked it recently.
