High Times and Uncertainty as Marijuana Startup Eaze Looks to the Future

It’s a terrifying and exciting time to be running a tech startup with a business model that’s entirely dependent on the state’s legal marijuana industry.

California voters in November approved recreational use of marijuana, and on-demand cannabis delivery company Eaze expects that by expanding into that market, it can grow its customer base to more than five times its current size. At the same time, the burgeoning industry faces potential challenges from the new Republican administration and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has spoken out against legalization in the past.

Making It Legal: The Tech Implications of Regulating Recreational Marijuana

Legalizing recreational marijuana has a broad range of policy implications for government. Do jurisdictions have the IT systems in place to deliver on the will of the voters?

But there are two advantages these states have when it comes to regulating the newly legitimate marijuana industry: technology and the experiences of states that came before them.

California: Is UCD going to get into the marijuana research business?

When Proposition 64 passed in California, legalizing recreational marijuana use, many people imagined that UC Davis might get into the pot business. With the No. 1 agricultural school in the nation, as well as a top plant biology program, UCD seems poised to become a cannabis research leader.

Not so fast, says Chief Campus Counsel Jacob Appelsmith.

“Under federal law, (marijuana) is a Schedule 1 drug,” Appelsmith said, as are heroin and LSD. Even as states are legalizing cannabis for both medical and recreational uses, the feds are not moving forward at the same pace.
