Legal cannabis was supposed to mean jobs and tax revenue as an enormous illicit market slowly gave way to regulated cultivation and sales.

That may yet happen, but so far, both sales and the accompanying tax haul have been lower than promised. And with companies missing sales and revenue goals, that means layoffs for the worker.

Multiple major brands in cannabis have announced cutting more than 10% of their workforces this fall. Joining software delivery platform Eaze and ad-platform Weedmaps, both of whom announced workforce cuts around  20% last month, are California brands Flow Kana, Cannacraft, and would-be national power player MedMen.

There’s a time and place for everything, and judging by cannabis business statistics, now is the perfect time to look for weed jobs in the Western countries.

Drake is reportedly making a sizable investment in the Canadian cannabis industry, along with other celebrities such as Martha Stewart, Snoop Dogg and Alex Rogan.

When Canada legalized marijuana, U.S. customs and immigration officials stated they could refuse entry not only to any person who uses or has used marijuana, but also to anyone who has invested or holds shares in a cannabis company.

It will be interesting to see how much difficulty these celebrities have returning to the U.S. after an engagement or doing business in Canada. I’m guessing none.

The Canadian post-secondary institutions are teaming up to provide new training and education opportunities for students, including related to cannabis. “Cannabis is a rapidly growing industry,” said Marian Gayed, vice president of business development at NorQuest College in Edmonton.

Poor headwinds and outsized influence of individual investors have dropped valuations at multiple cannabis companies.

To understand why investors and financial analysts have cooled on the cannabis industry, just look at the jobs. Previously, marijuana businesses were all growth. If you needed a job and wanted to change fields, cannabis was fertile soil for a fresh start. While you can still find work in cannabis, the biggest players aren’t hiring like they used to.

CannTrust Holdings Inc. has submitted a remediation plan to Health Canada as part of its efforts to regain the regulator’s trust and return to compliance.

The embattled cannabis producer says it’s aiming to complete all of the activities detailed within the plan by the end of the first quarter of next year, according to a release late Thursday.

Health Canada suspended the company’s sales and production licences in September after a number of regulatory missteps came to light, starting in July.

The plan includes “an expanded internal training program, a strengthened governance and operations framework, infrastructure enhancements, and prescribed accountabilities and timelines for a variety of specified tasks,” the company said.

Resumes in hand, hundreds of people turned up Tuesday to a job fair hosted by the Kitchener-based cannabis company James E. Wagner Cultivation (JWC). 

The company is hiring between 40 and 50 people at its facility on Manitou Drive. Some of the jobs up for grabs include positions in cannabis growing, trimming and equipment manufacturing. 

"I don't think we were ready for the amount of people that came actually," said human resources manager Barb Partridge. 

Job-seeker Paula Sharpe was among those who attended the fair. Sharpe has worked at a wide variety of jobs in her career and said she's ready to try her hand at something new.

Fanshawe College is rolling out a new research-focused program to train workers for Canada’s budding cannabis industry.

The cannabis applied science program, a one-year graduate certificate launching next fall, will teach students to analyze marijuana for quality, safety and stability. Students will also contribute to research and development of new pot products.

Since Canada legalized recreational cannabis one year ago, colleges and universities across the country have introduced courses and programs to train workers for the industry, specializing in everything from marijuana production and research to business and law.

With Canada getting a head start on most the world when it comes legalization, canna-tourism is about to take off.

In an attempt to help companies up their game, Blue Mountain Village Conference Centre will play host to the first annual New Heights Cannabis Tourism Summit next month.

“Canada has caught the world’s attention with the legalization of recreational cannabis and canna-tourism is the next big thing,” said Jennifer Mason, founder of the event. “Now that edibles will be launching on October 17th, it presents an even bigger opportunity for many tourism cannabis experiences.”

Ontario is particularly ripe for the new industry with its relatively relaxed regulations and an abundance of cannabis consumers interested in new adventures, Mason said.
