The best cannabis drinks in Canada right now

Somebody left the tap running on Canada’s cannabis drinks scene and now the market is overflowing with options. Don’t stress. You will not need a mop for cleanup—a chilled glass will do. Because this is not a complaint, but a celebration.

Not only has Canada’s legal cannabis 2.0 produced some delicious bevies, but it’s also providing an accessible new route to legal cannabis enjoyment for those reluctant to chow down on an infused gummy or light a pre-roll. We get it, you’ve been mis-dosed before.

Unlike the brownies your roommate poisoned you with in college, the legal cannabis drinks available in Canada tend to onset quicker, hit lighter, and not last as long as edibles do. Or, as one of Complex’s greener editors says, “They make me feel nice and buzzed without launching me into an anxiety spiral.”

Looking at the legal max of 10 mg of THC per can, some heavier cannabis users might be tempted to write all beverages off as useless or ineffective, but we’d encourage you to sip before you dip, regardless of how much weed you consume in other forms. You might be surprised by how far 10 mg, or even 2.5 mg, of THC or CBD will take you. And besides, they’re delicious and unique, with cannabis’ many terpene profiles being brought to the forefront in liquid form for the first time.

Here are the best cannabis drinks in Canada right now.

Cherry Cola by Sweet Justice

Cherry Cola Sweet Justice cannabis beverage

10 mg THC

Sweet Justice entered the market with the first cola-flavoured, THC-infused beverage, but didn’t win us over until it introduced a new cherry variant and upped the THC from 3.5 mg to 10 mg per can. It’s sweet enough to be enjoyed over ice, but guzzleable either way—and has as big a kick as any of the other beverages on this list. Beginners beware, and maybe start with half of the can.

Lemonade Iced Tea by Summit 10

Lemonade Iced Tea by Summit 10

10 mg THC: 2 mg CBD

I used to crush iced tea like a southern gentleman back in my high school days, but something changed when I left my teens behind. Cheers to Summit 10 for bringing the simple and satisfying drink back into my life with their non-carbonated Lemonade Iced Tea containing 10 mg of THC. It’s light, refreshing, not too sweet, doesn’t taste like cannabis at all, and comes in a resealable bottle so you can put it back in the fridge if you’re feeling adequately giddy after just a few sips.

Keef Bubba Kush Root Beer

Keef Bubba Kush Root Beer

10 mg THC

We admittedly don’t quite understand all the Mug memes circulating out there, but we’re happy to see root beer’s resurgence in the culture nonetheless. Props to Colorado-based company Keef for playing their part in the root beer-aissance with this beverage, awarded the 2015 High Times Cannabis Cup for Best Edible. It holds its own among the best iterations of the soft drink, up there with Dad’s or A&W, but also comes infused with an indica-dominant hybrid strain that’ll leave you feeling deeply relaxed and euphoric. Like the kush it’s named after, this caffeine-free beverage is ideal for combating insomnia and appetite loss—and its tendency to mix extremely well with ice cream should help with the latter. Weed root beer floats, anyone?

Blood Orange, Yuzu & Vanilla Sparkling Juice by Collective Project

Collective Project cannabis beverage

10 mg THC: 10 mg CBD

Collective Project’s beverages aren’t packaged quite as uniquely as their alcohol-based business cousin, Collective Arts, which features local art on each can (thanks cannabis advertising regulators), but the quality of the beverage is just as on point. The Blood Orange, Yuzu & Vanilla Sparkling Juice builds on that nostalgic orange creamsicle flavour with a yuzu twist and a citrus-y cannabis spike.

Indie Pals by Bedfellows

Bedfellows indie pal cannabis beverage

10 mg THC: 2 mg CBD

Not only is Bedfellows’ Indie Pals easily the best beer-style cannabis beverage, but it also might be the best non-alcoholic beer available in Canada, full stop. Reminiscent of B.C.’s flavourful Pacific Northwest IPAs, Indie Pals has notes of bitter hop and mellow summer fruit, and it just happens to give you a nice little buzz thanks to its 10 mg of THC and 2 mg of CBD per bottle. Expect the effects—a warm, contemplative, and happy high that moves from mind to body—to take hold before you’ve finished sipping and to last for an hour or two. For a little extra, try layering it with one of the nation’s most-hyped strains.

Tweed Fizz Mango

tweed mango cannabis beverage

5 mg THC

Tweed is cashing in on the trend of naturally flavoured sparkling waters with its range of light and easy drinking cannabis-infused Fizz drinks. With 5 mg of cannabis each and effects advertised as being felt in as little as 30 minutes and potentially lasting hours depending, they’re the kind of edible (a technical term still applied to cannabis beverages) that you could bring a few of to a party or BBQ.

Limonene and Sparkling Tonic by House of Terpenes

Limonene cannabis beverage

5 mg THC: 5 mg CBD

While some beverage brands are intentionally weeding out the taste of cannabis from their flavour profiles, Truss’ House of Terpenes is embracing it. Their range of THC-infused tonics including the crisp Limonene and Sparkling Tonic each highlight a different terpene profile, blending them into sessionable sips that are packaged in glass bottles, and balanced in flavour and effect with 5 mg THC and 5 mg CBD.

Ripple Dissolvable THC Powder by The Green Organic Dutchman

Ripple Dissolvable THC Powder by The Green Organic Dutchman

10 mg THC, or 10 mg THC: 10 mg CBD

For the kind of person who knows that the best drink is the one made in their own kitchen, there’s dissolvable THC powder like The Green Organic Dutchman’s Ripple powder, or water-soluble drops like Yawn Drops. Now, both have a cannabis note to them, but that bite (a taste we’re acquiring more by the day) can work well when incorporated into flavoured drinks like caesars, coffee, or juice. Users of TGOD’s Ripple report a rapid onset and suggest avoiding mixing with dairy, as it may curdle, or carbonated beverages, as it tends to agitate and flatten them.
