A routine traffic stop near Wahoo, Nebraska, turned into a record-setting cannabis bust for the Saunders County Sheriff’s Office earlier this week.

A deputy stopped a speeding vehicle on Nebraska Highway 92 with two occupants inside on Tuesday night, reports the Fremont Tribune. A K-9 unit was deployed and caught a whiff of something inside the U-Haul trailer that was being towed by the vehicle.

“This is probably the largest case that I can ever recall, and I’ve been around here a number of years,” said Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz.

Jose Lopez, 36, of California and Rodney Hernandez, 56, of New Mexico, were arrested and charged with possession with intent to deliver and taken into custody at Saunders County Correctional Facility.

Nebraska is one of the few remaining U.S. states that has a complete prohibition on cannabis, though that could change next year.

According to the Marijuana Policy Project, advocacy group Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana is working on a 2022 ballot initiative that would potentially end the criminalization of medical cannabis in the state.

Currently, possession of more than a pound of pot is a felony offence that can lead to five years in jail and a US$10,000 ($12,500) fine, per NORML.

Last December, a routine traffic stop in Manitoba led to the RCMP seizing more than 27 kilograms of cannabis.

Police alleged that the pot originated in western Canada and was destined for sale in Manitoba’s Interlake region. A 33-year-old man from the Gimli municipality was arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

In 2018, also in Manitoba, police made a record-setting bust when they pulled over a semi-trailer on the Trans-Canada Highway near the Ontario border.

After several errors were found on the driver’s paperwork, the police inspected the load and found 455 kg of cannabis and 34 kg of oils, edibles and other products, mixed in among legitimate food products.

At the time, it was believed to be the largest weed bust through a traffic stop in Canada in three years.
