Alberta Health Services is looking to ensure Albertans are consuming edible cannabis safely.

Edible cannabis products, aka edibles, contain cannabinoids that one eats or drinks, which is a chemical compound found in cannabis that can alter your mind and body when consumed.

They also recommended that edibles be properly labelled, stored in child-resistant containers and stored out of sight and reach of pets and children.

With edibles varying greatly between producers, AHS said it’s important to read the label and ingredients, including the instructions on how to use it, understanding the amount of THC and CBD in each edible, expiry dates, ingredients for allergic reactions and be patient after taking it so you can feel the effects before taking more.

AHS noted that consuming cannabis impacts individuals differently than smoking or vaping, and requires a longer amount of time to absorb the THC, approximately 30 minutes to two hours after consumption.

Additionally they noted the effects can last longer when ingesting edibles, anywhere from 12 to 24 hours after consuming them

The effects may also be more intense than smoking or vaping AHS added. They noted people should not operate or drive heavy equipment after using cannabis.

AHS said mixing alcohol or other substances with edibles can be dangerous and cause serious health issues, and individuals should choose between alcohol or cannabis but not both, and speak to a healthcare professional if using prescription medications to ensure they are safe to mix.
