Nuts and buds: Nova Scotia man finds metal parts in a pot package from NSLC

A man in Cape Breton, N.S., received a bizarre surprise when he visited his local Nova Scotia Liquor and Corporation Cannabis (NSLC) store in Sydney River location to pick up a little weed.

After making his selections, George Poulain stood at the counter to pay — and immediately noticed that all was not well with one of his chosen packages.

The cashier noticed the same and picked up the package for closer examination.

“She took the other one and I said to her immediately, ‘it sounds like there’s marbles in that one,’ and we both laughed,” Poulain told CTV News.

After deciding the box of Canopy Growth’s Houndstooth should be opened, the cashier called her boss to take a look.

“She called her supervisor in,” Poulain said. “The seal was broken, the container was opened, and there were nuts and bolts found inside the container.”

Official NSLC spokesperson Beverley Ware says that this is the first time the corporation has seen anything like this since its inception as a cannabis dispensary nearly a year ago.

“All of our product comes from federally-licensed producers, and they operate under very strict federal regulations when it comes to their production,” she said. “So, we contacted the company right away, alerted them to this issue, and they’re doing an investigation to see if they can determine what may have happened.”

Canopy said in a statement that it is unsure of how the parts ended up in Poulain’s near-purchase, but that it is “working with the NSLC to gather information. Canopy Growth applies hundreds of quality control checkpoints to our products, including metal detection.”

Ware reminds clients that any defective cannabis products purchased at the NLSC can be returned to the point of purchase for an exchange or a full refund.

The incident comes on the heels of a B.C. man finding a pencil in a pre-rolled joint from Terrascend’s Haven Street LP.
