Trump Tuesday: John Oliver Calls For Nationwide Bathroom Ban Against Donald Trump

Last week, the Trump Administration rolled back federal guidelines that required schools to let transgender students use restrooms and dressing rooms that reflect their gender identity. The move was likely influenced by fears that allowing people of different sexes to use the same restroom could be unsafe for young women, but John Oliver of Last Week Tonight says that one of the few people who would do that is President Donald Trump himself.

Opposition to the guidelines -- which were introduced by former President Barack Obama -- often centres on the issue of safety. “Our daughters should never be forced to share private, intimate spaces with male classmates, even if those young men are struggling with these issues,” Vicki Wilson - a member of Students and Parents for Privacy - told reporters shortly before the guideline was rescinded. “It violates their right to privacy and harms their dignity.”

But Oliver argues that those fears are rooted in bigoted fear-mongering instead of fact.

"As we've discussed before on this show, anti-transgender rules like bathroom bills are almost always rooted in deep sexual fear-mongering," he said on the latest episode of Last Week Tonight. "The idea that they would provide cover for predators to sneak into ladies' locker rooms despite the fact that there is virtually no evidence of that happening."

He added that underage women arguably have more to fear from President Trump than the supposed sexual predators waiting to abuse bathroom laws.

"What there are reports of though, are of Trump himself barging in on women and teenagers who competed in his pageants while they changed. Something that in characteristic style, he has both denied and been recorded on tape bragging about....If we really want to protect women from predators, let's stop wasting our time with pointless, vindictive bathroom laws and instead launch a 'military operation' to ban the president himself from women's rooms nationwide."
