Marijuana Legalization Brings Questions for Casinos

Now that the citizens of Nevada have decided to permit recreational marijuana both the state’s gaming licensee’s and gaming regulators need to figure out what it really means to the state’s gaming industry.

One might think – since the state has approved the use of both medical and recreational marijuana –what’s the big deal? Why not treat cannabis consumption no differently than, say, a new beer?

However, while now legal in Nevada, marijuana is still considered a big “no, no” by the Feds. Back when the medical use of marijuana was passed, the Nevada Gaming Control Board with the endorsement of the policy making Nevada Gaming Commission came out and basically said any Nevada gaming licensee’s involvement with medical marijuana would not be tolerated and a licensee could lose their license and/or not be granted subsequent gaming licenses if they pursued any commercial interest in marijuana.
