Marijuana users at significantly lower risk for obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease

A new study published in The American Journal of Medicine finds that people who currently use marijuana are about 50 percent less likely to develop metabolic syndrome than people who have never smoked marijuana.

Metabolic syndrome is a “cluster of conditions,” including elevated blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, excess abdominal body fat and abnormal cholesterol levels — these conditions occur together and increase risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes in patients suffering from metabolic syndrome, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Researchers from the University of Miami School of Medicine examined research from 8,500 people, ages 20 to 59, and classified individuals into three groups: people who currently use marijuana, people who used to consume marijuana and people who never used marijuana.
