Family Physicians Split Over Marijuana's Legal Status

But members agreed: no more jail for marijuana offenses

DENVER -- Family physicians were divided over whether marijuana should be legalized for recreational use or simply decriminalized, but agreed that jail time for marijuana offences served no good.

Two resolutions before the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Congress of Delegates addressed marijuana: One promoting legalization and the other called for reclassification from a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) schedule I drug to a schedule II drug to allow for research access.

After hearing testimony, the reference committee changed the language of the resolution from "legalization" to "decriminalization," and that resolution was adopted. And the resolution addressing the reclassification of marijuana to a schedule II drug was reaffirmed.
