FDA decision on marijuana is unfeasible

Demanding the FDA to make determinations regarding the safety and efficacy of marijuana is politically unfeasible ["Iowa lawmaker: Medical marijuana is an FDA decision," April 9].

The FDA exists to determine whether patented, synthetic medicines developed by private companies can be brought to market. Since federal law forbids any legal private manufacturers of marijuana to exist, there exists no entity available to conduct the sort of large-scale Phase III trials necessary to trigger an FDA review. Further, the FDA is not in the business of reviewing botanical agents. Such products typically are typically regulated as supplements, which do not require FDA approval.

That is not to imply that cannabis does not meet objective standards or safety and efficacy. Given the substance's several thousand-year-history as a medicine, low toxicity and inability to cause lethal overdose in humans, cannabis is arguably safer than most conventional therapeutics.
