Cyprus set for new roadside drug testing

MPs appear to have found common ground to pave the way for an upgraded law in which motorists could be subject to roadside drug testing.

The police are determined to combat the menace of drug-driving, which is thought to also play a hand in Cyprus’ dismal road safety record. Moves to bring in ‘drugalysers’ for roadside tests on drivers had been hampered by poor technology and failure to agree on how the testing would be conducted

But a solution has been found during the latest session at the House Legal Affairs Committee.

Blood tests are set to be ruled out with saliva samples to be taken instead according to the new bill which is now set to go before parliament.

Not everyone is in agreement, however. According to the head of the State General Laboratory Popi Kanari, she says that a saliva sample should be taken at the scene followed...
